Local Poet's Book Finally Published After Death

reported by Nancy Sperling, FictionFanatic.com

Christine Whitmarsh and her family are coming out with a collection of poetry written during the 1940s and 1950s by Whitmarsh's grandmother Allene Pitman, published posthumously.

"Publishing this book of my grandmother's poems has been a goal of ours for a long time. We're so pleased that this dream has finally become a reality," said Whitmarsh.

The poems in the collection, entitled Waking Words due to Pitman's habit of writing after waking in the middle of the night, were all written between 1948 and 1952. Pitman's collection of nostalgic poetry describes a simpler, easier time in the world, reflected by titles like "Two Little Houses", "Dreams" and "Words."

"This was a time of fresh apple pies cooling on pie racks in spacious farmhouse kitchens, and children picking mayflowers on dewy hills and nothing at all to interrupt it," said Whitmarsh.

Allene Pitman drew her inspiration from another local author, Robert Frost, as well as Robert Louis Stevenson, giving her poetry a very warm New England feel. Some of the poetry was published regularly in several Boston area newspapers, including the Lynn Daily Evening Item and the Boston Post. Pitman's stint as a poet was fleeting, like dreams in the night, but Whitmarsh is proud to rekindle her grandmother's words 50 years later.

Christine Whitmarsh is now a successful business owner, journalist and author who owns a nationwide writing firm called Christine, Ink. She has also recently published her first book entitled One Citizen's Words, dedicated to the memory of her grandmother.

"My grandmother's words in 'Waking Words' were a reflection of her era and 'One Citizen's Words' is a reflection of my era. I'm so excited to connect our words over time and honor my grandmother's memory in this way," said Whitmarsh.
